Step 4: Knockout Factors and Practice Questions
While a good resume, cover letter, and job application are essential to getting considered for a position, they are seldom sufficient. All of that networking, self-analysis, writing, and spell checking usually has one goal—to get you an interview. Not surprisingly, many job seekers dread interviews for the same reasons that many persons are uncomfortable with public speaking. An interview requires you to be at your best, on top of your game, generally without a script, and often without a clear idea of what the exact questions or setting will be.
The one thing that will ensure your best opportunity to shine is preparation! There are a few key steps to having a successful interview. And while no amount of preparation can guarantee you'll get the job, lack of preparation significantly lessens your chances. Above is a list of contents of some steps we think are key to preparing for a successful interview. We encourage you to view each section at least one time. Also, know that IUPUI students and alumni have access to the Office of Student Employment and to career counselors in the Office of Academic and Career Development, as needed, to help you along the way.
