Students Talking in Study Area

Searching

There are a lot of different ways to search for a job, whether it is for a part-time job while taking classes, an internship to gain experience, or a full-time position as you graduate. Be sure to utilize all resources possible. Here are ideas to get you started:

  • Online:
    • JagJobs lists everything from part-time, on-campus positions to full-time, off-campus positions.
    • The IUPUI Human Resources website lists part- and full-time positions on campus.
    • Visit a variety of websites (the list to the right should get you started). Also, look at websites of professional organizations specific to your career and occupational area.
  • Networking: The term “networking” may sound intimidating, but it all depends on how you look at it. Start with who you know, like friends, family, former bosses, co-workers, faculty, and people you are comfortable talking to and who care about you and your professional success.
  • Newspaper ads: When you are on campus, pick up a free copy of the Indianapolis Star and take a look at the classifieds section. Also, you may find job openings listed in the Sagamore, the university newspaper.
  • Career events: Attend workshops, career fairs, and more! Some events require registration or advance preparation; learn more on the career events calendar.
  • E-mail and electronic mailing lists: Check your e-mail for job announcements on general electronic mailing lists (e.g., JagNews) and through department- or school-specific electronic mailing lists.
  • Class announcements: Professors and instructors may announce job openings in your classes.
  • On-campus recruiting: Employers schedule recruiting on-campus visits with individual schools. Check with your school to find out about upcoming employer visits scheduled specifically with your school.
  • Contact employer directly: Do you know where you want to work? Contact that employer and ask about job openings.
  • Campus bulletin boards: As you are walking down the halls, glance at flyers posted on bulletin boards.
  • Volunteer: It's a fantastic way to meet other people and increase your network of contacts. Volunteer in a field of interest!
  • Clubs and organizations: Clubs and organizations keep you up to date on the latest trends in your field and provide opportunities to meet with various employers.

REMEMBER! Before you begin your job search, make sure you have a resume prepared. Have a few people look at it prior to giving it to employers. Have a family member or friend, your career services office, and if possible, someone who works in the field review your resume. With any job search, it can sometimes take a while, so hang in there. Do your best to stay positive and motivated. Here are some tips:

  • Set goals for your job search
  • Attend personal and professional workshops and seminars
  • Manage stress (e.g., work out, go on walks, meditate)
  • Make time to go out and have some fun (everyone needs a break!)
