1. When contacting your alumni mentor (either via e-mail or phone), politely introduce yourself and let him or her know you found his or her profile through the IUPUI Alumni Mentor Database.
2. Ask the mentor if she or he would mind answering questions about her or his education, job, career field, employer, etc.
3. Ask the mentor if he or she would like to communicate entirely via e-mail (send the questions to him or her) or if he or she prefers setting up an appointment to speak on the phone or, if time and locations allow, to meet in person.
4. After the communication, the student should express her or his appreciation for the mentor's time and the information provided. Even if the student does not decide to pursue this field, she or he should thank the mentor for her or his time and simply state that the information provided helped the student to determine it was not the best fit for her or him.
